ISLAA is delighted to co-organize a two-day conference held in connection with the exhibition This Must Be the Place: Latin American Artists in New York, 1965–1975, currently on view at Americas Society.

The event convenes an international group of scholars, artists, and curators to delve more deeply into some of the artistic practices and issues the exhibition raises.

This conference will be held entirely online and streamed live via Zoom. All presentations, including keynote talks, will be presented live in English.

State of the Field: Feminism in Latin American and Latinx Art History Today

Format: Zoom seminar; 90-minute discussion amongst panelists with 30 minutes for audience Q&A

This seminar brings together colleagues in the subfield of Latin American and Latinx art history to engage in an informal conversation about issues related to the study of artists who identify as female and feminist methods in the study of art and visual culture. Since it emerged as a force amongst artists, critics, and art historians, feminism has been both a useful and contested tool. Its status continues to be questioned in the face of the need to address evolving concepts of gender identity and the persistence of white supremacy within art history. Questions that will be explored in this seminar include the following: 1) What are the current implications and uses of feminist methodologies for the study of Latin American art? 2) How do we analyze works by women-identified artists without limiting ourselves to gender issues? 3) What are the current challenges for feminisms in and around Latin American art? 

We aim to explore current research related to art historians’ incorporation of new, speculative feminisms into their practice accounting for gender fluidity and the concerns of the trans community. Additionally, we will discuss feminism’s account for intersectional concerns, such as race, class, and the environment, as well as feminist critiques of patriarchal structures of power.

Yolanda Olveros and Mari Rodriguez are high school classmates who discover they live in the same predominantly Mexican neighborhood in Los Angeles. The two teenagers forge a friendship while negotiating the expectations of their migrant parents. The intense social and personal pressures to belong bring them both intimately closer to one another. As visual artist Felipe Baeza, tonight’s guest presenter, notes, “MOSQUITA Y MARI is not your standard coming out story,” but rather a layered meditation on migration, sexuality, and working-class family life, all themes that are near to Baeza’s personal experience.

As Stuart interviews people in Slade’s past, the unfolding series of flashbacks reveals what really happened to the famed glam star. For interdisciplinary filmmaker Ela Troyano, VELVET GOLDMINE “queers pop music culture of the ‘70s and ‘80s—from its fairytale Oscar Wilde origin story to the raw musical performances by Ewan McGregor and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, inspired by the legendary sexual antics of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Lou Reed.”

Major Motoko Kusanagi is a cyborg living in the fictional Japanese city of Niihama, circa 2029. As commander of a task force in search of hackers overtaking the cyberbrains of cyborg-human hybrids, she is made to confront her own identity and alienation. For video and performance artist Elektra KB, GHOST IN THE SHELL presents “technological possibilities for some disabled humans, that, like me, fantasize often about getting a functional robot body.” In Elektra’s words, the film prompts us to “think of speculative trans-feminist technologies while showing elements of a radically tender, liberatory future in an AI cybernetic-dysphoria-hacking cyberpunk world.”

Nomi Malone is running from her past and chasing stardom as a showgirl in Las Vegas. She finds her way through “a tornado of thrusting and rhinestones” navigating the dance world’s dark underbelly of misogyny and exploitation. Guest presenter and visual artist Martine Gutierrez describes this box-office-flop-turned-cult-classic as a “sexy, sexy mystery,” oozing with campy excess and a glittery dash of film noir. A capital-d Diva armed in “Versayce,” Nomi is aggressive in her sexuality, gender performativity, and ambition. Gutierrez reflects on how Nomi’s dreams push her to obscene extremes, asking us to consider: Is it possible to over-realize a world?

DUETS is a series of publications that pairs artists, activists, writers, and thinkers in dialogues about their creative practices and current social issues around HIV/AIDS.

Join us on Wednesday, February 13 at 7pm for a zine launch of a publication that includes photographs from this Session and a text by Vivian Crockett commissioned as part of the Critical Writing Program at Recess. An Army of Lovers: ART+ Artists in Conversation

ART+Positive was an influential affinity group of the AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power (ACT UP) / New York, responding to government neglect of the AIDS crisis and the conservative homophobia and censorship of the Culture Wars. ART+Positive’s collective aesthetic embodied a “militant eroticism” centering queer sexuality and raw, powerful freedom of expression.

An Army of Lovers: ART+Positive Artists In Conversation will feature members of the artist / activist collective including Aldo Hernández, Lola Flash and Dennis Davidson, to discuss their impactful art and political actions. Images and dialogue will highlight ART+Positive’s anti-Jesse Helms protest on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1989; their collective exhibitions, including “An Army Of Lovers: Combatting AIDS, Homophobia and Censorship” at PS122 in 1990; and their collaborative large-scale Positive Flag, Negative Flag, 1990, among other agitprop projects.

The intergenerational event is organized by Alex Fialho and moderated by Vivian Crockett, and will also include comments by the steward of the ART+Positive archives Dr. Daniel Berger, to celebrate the publication of Militant Eroticism: The ART+Positive Archives, edited by Berger and John Neff and published by Sternberg Press in 2017.

Aperture Conversations: Guadalupe Rosales and Vivian Crockett.

Aperture Foundation is pleased to present a night of conversation between artist Guadalupe Rosales and independent curator Vivian Crockett.

Since 2015, artist Guadalupe Rosales has been building an archive of vernacular photographs and ephemera connected to Latinx culture in Los Angeles. Her projects exist as both archives of physical objects and crowdsourced digital archives, assembled on her widely followed Instagram accounts (@veteranas_and_rucas and @map_pointz). Guided by an instinct to create counter narratives, Rosales tells the stories of communities often underrepresented in official archives and public memory.

A short reception will be held after the talk to celebrate Rosales’s exhibition, Legends Never Die, A Collective Memory. For this exhibition, which extends from a feature in Aperture’s Fall 2018 issue, “Los Angeles,” Rosales presents an installation of materials from her archives—from photobooth images of couples to young Chicanx women posing with cars to the party crews that ran East LA’s underground music scene in the 1990s.

For the Sixth Annual Last Address Tribute Walk, Visual AIDS Programs Director Alex Fialho will lead a tribute walk to the Lost Addresses of six sites marked by cultural and activist HIV/AIDS histories in the West Village: Florent, The Mineshaft, The Clit Club, The Piers, The Neutral Zone, and St Vincent’s Hospital. Highlighting former sites of nightlife, housing, creativity and care, the 6th Annual Last Address Tribute Walk locates community and social life in the midst of the AIDS crisis.

The program will begin at 3PM with a screening of Ira Sachs’ film Last Address (2010, 9 min.) at the Whitney Museum, followed by short video clips contextualizing each site, including Charles Atlas’ Butcher’s Vogue (1991, shot at Florent), a slideshow created by Julie Tolentino of Clit Club invitations, and more. The event will then move to the streets of the West Village, stopping at each address for readings by special guests involved with or influenced by the sites who will share a tribute in a spirit of lively of remembrance: Stuart Comer at Florent (69 Gansevoort Street); Brad Gooch at The Mineshaft(835 Washington Street); Vivian Crockett, Tara Hart, Michele Hill and Lori E. Seid with words by Julie Tolentino at The Clit Club (432 W 14th Street); Egyptt LaBeija at The Piers (at Pier 48); Luna Luis Ortiz at The Neutral Zone (162 Christopher Street); and Rafael Sánchez at St Vincent’s Hospital (15 7th Avenue). At each site, a drawing by Win Mixter evoking the Lost Addresses and a rose will be left in tribute. Through the constellation of readings and roses, drawings and doorsteps, the Last Address Tribute Walk situates community through remembrance and response.

MoMA Modern Mondays: "An Evening with Tiona Nekkia McClodden," screening and discussion

Tiona Nekkia McClodden is a visual artist, filmmaker, and curator whose work, rooted in “narrative biomythography” (the weaving of the personal, historical and mythic), examines collective histories of black and queer cultural production and life.

Marking the premiere of McClodden’s short film Dom Drop (2017), this program pairs the film with a selection of recent video projects that explore themes of identity, power, rage, queerness, and BDSM through meditations on the legacy of two black, gay poets, Brad Johnson and Essex Hemphill, who died of AIDS-related complications nearly 20 years apart. The screening is followed by a discussion with Tiona Nekkia McClodden and Vivian Crockett, centering on McClodden’s recent personal and biographical projects and highlighting a new turn toward the examination and activation of social spaces.

How do artists and curators, collaborate with one another, but also with different institutions and communities in the making of performance-oriented curatorial projects? How do curators and artists work together in co-imagining modes of display, presentation, and performance for both existing and new works? In which ways do the curatorial act and the artistic act respond to each other’s specificity (or fail to do so!), when curating performance? How performance and curation as dialogical practices may not only re-shape ideas and acts of collaboration, but also of participation and curatorial care? An international and multidisciplinary group of scholars, artists and curators from Singapore, Brazil, Canada, the UK, and the US will gather throughout the day to discuss collaborative practices across the arts.

Join us for a very special conversation in conjuction with our newest exhibition with artist Carlos Martiel and New York–based independent researcher, scholar, and curator Vivian Crockett as they discuss Martiel’s newest piece “Intruder (America)” in relationship to Martiel’s long-term performance practice and its themes.

Intruder (America) is the first of two iterations of a new performance by Cuban artist Carlos Martiel. The piece derives its inspiration from the current migratory crisis that has quickly intensified and exacerbated in the United States after the election of Donald Trump. Within this context, Crockett and Martiel will examine how themes such as migration, displacement, systemic violence, anti-black racism and xenophobia on global and nationally specific scales, among others, have informed Martiel’s practice and tactics of engagement.
